5594(IV)_Devastating Floods in Timor Leste
By Fr. Abilio E. Correia Guterres, SDB
Dili – Comoro, Timor Leste, 6 April 2021 -- Whilst in the middle of a worrying new Covid-19 outbreak, Timor Leste has been hit by torrential rains sparking widespread destruction in East Timor: devastating flooding and landslides have claimed the lives of at least 30 people (including one former Salesian) with many people still missing; roads, bridges, and houses have been destroyed, as the capital Dili is left under water. The floods have come as a serious blow to communities already facing so many challenges and hardships.
The Salesian Community in Don Bosco Comoro, along with some of other religious communities (Canossian, FMA, Dominican, OCD,) in Dili, have become a places of emergency accommodation for thousands of citizens who have fled from their homes due to this unexpected natural disaster.
The registered total of evacuees in Don Bosco Comoro number more than 500 households and 3000 individuals, many of whom are among the most vulnerable (disabled, pregnant women, women who just gave birth, and children).
The local Salesians, aspirants, boarding students and wider Salesian families (Don Bosco Past Pupils, ADMA, Salesian Cooperators and neighbours) are working tirelessly in providing food and comfort to them during this difficult time. Furthermore, representative from the local Church and government have come to provide support to the flood refugees (words of consolation and materials).
In the past two days we have experienced such inspiring generosity, compassion, and solidarity from the NGOs, Salesian families, local businesses and institutions, churches, support agencies and government bodies, and many others who have helped out with providing food, clothing, basic medicines, and essential items.
We are deeply grateful for your generosity in a time when everyone is struggling, and we pray God will shower you with abundant graces.
We ask you to keep Timor Leste in your prayers, which are always greatly appreciated. If you would like to support Timor Leste with donations, this would go a great deal to helping those most in need.
