BANGKOK: 30th November 2007 -- The 'Salesian Games
2007', a grand event bringing together some 3,700 Salesians, staff and
students from all Salesian schools in Thailand, have just concluded.
This year they were held at Sarasit Pithayalai (Bampong) from 27-30
November.
The Thai Province holds a major event for all its
schools each year, varying the focus on a three year cycle: Academy
Contest, Scouts, Games. The event just concluded was the sixth such set
of Games. Other venues for similar events have been at St Dominic
Savio School Bangkok, Saeng Thong School Hat Yai, Don Bosco School
Udonthani, and Vithayalai at Hua Hin.
The 'Salesian Games' are organised in such a way
that the youngsters can take part in either sports or music,
reminiscent of Don Bosco's times, taking youngsters in long walks
through the countryside where they brought their band instruments with
them and exercised themselves physically as well. The 'modern Thai
version' takes the youngsters to one or other part of the country where
they play games such as football, basketball, badminton, tennis, golf,
table tennis, swimming.... and in the evenings watch the various
performances from the schools.
The Provincial, Fr Dheparat Pitisant, opened the
Games on 27 November, expressing the desire that not only schools but
all centres of the Province in Thailand, Cambodia and now Laos should
be able to participate in future events of the kind. The occasion
also brought together many confreres from around the Province,
accompanying their students.
On 28 November, apart from the sports contests of
the day, there was a concert in honour of King Rama IX on the occasion
of his 80th birthday (December 5th). For this concert, 200
members of school bands from different school joined together as a
combined orchestra for a wonderful concert.
The final day saw all 3,700 participants gathered on
the arena in Bampong district. The day closed at 3.00 pm with the
strong feeling that it was 'good to be together in a Salesian House
sharing the same spirit of Don Bosco'. Click
