A Mongolian Christmas
(We resume austraLasia items after a break over the Christmas-New Year
period)
Ulaanbatar-Amagalan: 31st December 2008 -- The Amagalan Dominic
Savio community, on the outskirts of Ulaanbataar, Mongolia, has
celebrated the Christmas season with its immediate neighbours, the
poor. There are three Salesians in the community and Fr Paul Leung is
the Rector. As Bro Arnold, one of the community members writes:
"Salesian volunteers, staff and our children organised a Christmas
service for the poor, our neighbours. Around 150 came to the Centre".
The Christmas program began with a mini-concert and performance by
youngsters from the Centre, consisting of drama, songs, poetry and
music. The staff too, performed. All this was followed by games for
the youngsters which took them through to lunch time, after which
precious gifts of oil, rice, flour, sugar and some clothes were
distributed. Families also received books and writing materials.
The families gave thanks, represented by one of them who spoke of
her life alone with her children, always finding it difficult to
provide. She was so grateful for the gifts and the moments of
celebration.
