Words of consolation after her painful departure from Turin – the days of true joy are those in paradise – he moves to Valsalice in Turin to enjoy some cooler weather – no imminent danger of war

Turin-Valsalice, 12 June 1887

Dear Miss,

I hope your trip to Aire was good and that you are in good health, as I pray for you every morning at Holy Mass. You spent a few days with us, but when you left you seemed very distressed, almost in tears. That hurt me. Perhaps you have not fully understood the meaning of my words, for I have always assured you that our relationships on earth were not lasting; but in eternal life

Now the heat was threatening to burn us in Turin, so I came to Valsalice where I feel much better, thanks to the cooler climate.

All we need now is for you to be here to help me regain some of my strength. Patience. I will not fail to say a special prayer for you and Miss Lyons every morning at Holy Mass.

Is Father Engrand feeling better? Does his health allow him to work?

All the Salesians talk about you, about your charity, and they all assure me that they pray for you every day.

And the war? Don’t worry, if I see any danger, I’ll let you know right away, as long as I’m still alive!

May God bless you, charitable young lady, may the Blessed Virgin keep you in good health; long but always and surely on your way to Paradise.

Farewell! Pray for this poor priest who will always be in Jesus Christ,

Your most obliged servant

Fr John Bosco
