To the Rector of the house in Nice, Fr Giuseppe Ronchail
E V, 2297
Indicates how to find the necessary funds for the patronage of St Peter in the city.
Turin, March 1876
My dear Fr Ronchail,
Since we have embarked on this task, we must see it through to the end; therefore, we must resolve the difficulties that arise in our patronage of St Peter. Therefore, if the honourable notary Saietto can find the sum of 60 thousand francs on loan, we will all endeavour to find the remaining 30 thousand francs needed for the immediate payment for the Gautier house. So:
1. Tell Mr Michel, lawyer, and Baron Héraud to seek ubique terrarum to add one thing to another — that is, money to money; especially by cultivating the Marchioness Villeneuve, the Englishwoman lodging beneath the Baron’s quarters, Count Aspromonte, and anyone else who might be of use to us in the distribution of Carnival charity. Since the mayor repeatedly stated that he was involved in our case both as a citizen and as head of the municipality, and that he would also contribute, it is appropriate to request a memorandum to ask for a contribution of 30,000 lire to be paid in cash immediately, to carry out work that certainly concerns the most deserving group, namely the abandoned children of Nice. Who knows if Mr Dellepiane will come to the rescue?
2. You should on with Mr Pirone, Mr Daideri, and also with Canon Bres, so that they may make some effort in this exceptional case. Tell Mr Audoli to apply all his patience, his charity and also his purse. Perhaps Father Giordano could also be of assistance. The bishop will add something else, but I will write to him in due course.
3. In the meantime, let’s sort things out, reach a compromise, and set a deadline of about two months to draw up the agreement. At the end of this month, I am going to Rome, and from there I will do what I can. Two weeks before the date set for the notarial deed, write to me telling me how much you still need, and I will arrange to send it to you, even if I have to take out a loan in Turin.
God wants this Work, and we cannot refuse without offending his holy will. If we cooperate, we are certain of a favourable outcome. But it must be said that the devil will put his tail in the way, and we will work together to cut it off. It would also be a good idea to inform the Bishop without making any requests.
Say hello to the aforementioned gentlemen, let us pray with faith and divine help will not fail us. God bless us all, and believe that I am, in J. C.
Your most affectionate friend
Fr John Bosco
