Waldenian pastor Luigi De Sanctis

To Waldenian pastor Luigi De Sanctis

E I, 206

Former Catholic priest, Luigi de Sanctis (1808-1869) converted to the Waldensian Church and became a pastor in 1852. In 1854, he came into conflict with his community. Don Bosco believed it was the right moment to try to approach him

Valdocco, Turin, 17 November 1854

Distinguished and Esteemed Sir,

For some time now, I have been thinking about writing a letter to you to express my sincere desire to speak with you and offer you what a sincere friend can offer to a friend. This was evident from a careful reading of your books, in which I seemed to discern a genuine uneasiness in your heart and spirit.

Now, since certain things printed in the newspapers seem to indicate that you are in disagreement with the Waldensians, moved solely by a spirit of affection and Christian charity, I invite you to come to my home, if you so desire.

To do what? Whatever the Lord inspires you to do. You will have a room to live in, you will have a modest table with me; you will share bread and study with me. And this without any expense on your part as a result.

These are the friendly sentiments I express to you from the bottom of my heart. If you can understand how loyal and sincere my friendship towards you is, you will accept my proposals, or at least show me kind sympathy.

May God grant my wishes and make us one heart and one soul for the Lord, who will give just reward to those who serve him in life.

Yours most sincerely in J. C.

Fr John Bosco
