To the editor of the Bollettino Salesiano, Fr Giovanni Bonetti
E VI, 2713
He advises against being controversial in articles published in the Salesian Bulletin — accuracy without exaggerating the numbers of Salesian priests who left Valdocco — various errands — information about his travel plans.
Rome, 14 February 1878
My dear Fr Bonetti,
Stop fighting, and write peaceful words as I have recommended so many times. I only skimmed through the article on Pius IX. Please check that there are no disconnections.
Adjust the subject of the Rome Conference.
You noted that 600 priests have left from our houses when you should have put four times as many. I remember that when Fr Francesia was teaching 5a class in a single year to over 84 students, 80 entered the clergy. In general, it is best not to mention these figures so as not to offend certain civil and church sensitivities. LetBs never forget that we are sub hostile potestate.
Write a notebook without even mentioning your health. I recommend that you show yourself all the respect you would show to Don Bosco.
Tell those who need to know that everything is at a standstill these days. On Saturday, I am going to Magliano: next week, I will go and greet the new Pope and then I will leave for home. I need Ghione and Ghiglione to really behave themselves.
Keep an eye on Fr Barberis’ health. You behave yourself if you want to stay healthy.
May God bless us all and pray for your friend
Fr John Bosco
P. S. Remember not to send the Bulletin to Countess Veronica Macchi if she is already on file.
