To Pope Leo XIII
E VI, 2719
On behalf of the entire Salesian congregation, he offers congratulations on his election as supreme head of the Church and asks for protection for the congregation.
Most Holy Father,
The extraordinary election of Your Holiness as supreme head of the Church filled all Catholics with the greatest consolation.
The Salesians, or religious of the Pious Society of St Francis de Sales, humbly but affectionately and respectfully associate themselves with these many adopted children.
This congregation has been advised, directed and approved by the venerable memory of Pius IX, but it still greatly needs Your Holiness’ protection so that it may achieve the stability necessary to promote the greater glory of God.
All prostrate and united in one heart and one soul, they venerate and recognise the Successor of St Peter, the Supreme Head of the Church, the Vicar of Jesus Christ in the august person of Your Holiness; all Salesians and the children entrusted to them with filial affection offer their efforts, hearts, possessions and lives, both in Europe and in the foreign missions, should Your Holiness deem it useful to avail yourself of their services.
With the utmost veneration and unwavering devotion, they ask for your apostolic blessing, while on behalf of all, having for the first time the incomparable honour of being able to prostrate himself at the feet of
Your Holiness, I am
you most affectionate, obliged son,
Fr John Bosco
Rector Major of the Salesians of the Salesian Congregation
