Various confidences – Salesians who have died or are seriously ill – trust in the Lord – requests for special prayers

Turin, 24 July 1865

Distinguished Countess,

Young Ruffino is absent, and I am unable to have her come by tomorrow; her mother is spending a few days with the Vicar of Lanzo. As soon as I am able to speak with one or the other, I will see what is best to do and will inform you immediately.

I have not forgotten the book; indeed, I still have it in mind; only inability has delayed its publication.

Oh my! Five of the most important priests fell ill all at the same time. Fr Ruffino flew gloriously to Paradise a week ago; the brave Fr Alasonatti is close behind him, while the other three leave little hope of recovery.

At such times, imagine how many expenses, how much trouble, how many tasks have fallen on Don Bosco’s shoulders.

Do not think that I am discouraged; I am just tired, nothing more. The Lord gave, changed, and took away at the time he saw fit; may his holy name be blessed forever. I am also comforted by the hope that after the storm, good weather will follow. When you are finally settled in Vignale, I hope to visit you and stay for a few days.

0h Countess, I find myself at a time when I am in great need of enlightenment and strength; help me with your prayers; and commend me also to the holy souls whom you know.

Blessings upon you, your husband, and your entire respectable family, as I have the honour of professing with the most heartfelt gratitude that I am

Your Distinguished Countess’s

most obliged servant,

Fr John Bosco
