Words of faith and hope to face the difficulties of being faithful to religious life
Turin, 8 August 1875
Beloved Daughter in Jesus Christ,
Your journey to Mornese struck such a blow to the world that it sent the enemy of our souls to trouble you. But listen to the voice of God calling you to save yourself by an easy and smooth path, and despise every contrary suggestion. Indeed, be happy with the disturbances and anxieties you experience, because the way of the cross is the one that leads us to God.
On the contrary, if you had been immediately cheerful and happy, there would be reason to fear some deception by the evil enemy. Therefore, remember:
1. Glory cannot be attained without great effort;
2. We are not alone, but Jesus is with us; and St Paul says that with Jesus' help we become almighty;
3. Those who abandon their homeland, relatives and friends and follow the divine master are assured of a treasure in heaven that no one can take away from them;
4. The great reward prepared in heaven must encourage us to endure any suffering on earth.
Take heart, then: Jesus is with us. When you have thorns, place them with those of the crown of Jesus Christ. I commend you to God in Holy Mass; pray for me, that I may always be in Jesus Christ
Your most humble servant,
Fr John Bosco
