“Do what you can, God will do what we cannot do. Entrust everything to J.C. in the Blessed Sacrament and to Mary Help of Christians and you will see what miracles are.”

Sampierdarena, 13 November 1875

To Fr Cagliero

1. Take care of everyone's health and morality, and ensure that everyone gets the rest they need..

2. To Dr Ceccarelli, from whom I received 200 francs, and whom I commend for the Argentine catechism, that is, a copy that is needed of the Companion of Youth printed in Spanish.

3. Please get Tomatis to translate my [book on ] arithmetic into Spanish and send it to me so that it can be printed here in Turin. See if there is a good text on bible history; if not, we will prepare one.

4. Do not forget a Catholic or other book for Rev. Espinosa.

5. When Allavena and his companions are on board ship in Marseilles, write me a dispatch to this effect: all have arrived and in good health; otherwise, omit ‘all’.

6. Whenever you have the opportunity during the voyage, write whatever you can, but always enclose a confidential note to tell me what is necessary.

7. Show every sign of respect to Mr Franc.co Benítez, pointing out to him that he is also a Franciscan, that is, he bears the name of our patron saint.

8. Let no one boast about what they know or what they do; when it comes to tests, everyone should do their best without showing off.

9. If you are ever able to send money, please address it to Fr Rua using the method indicated by Comm. Gazzolo.

10. In your letters, always mention prayers, gratitude to those who have helped you, and to all those who support the Oratory. On this point, do not be afraid to say too much.

11. On the way or at the end of your voyage, write a few notes to your main benefactors, such as the Marquis and Marchioness Fassati; Mamma Corsi and family; Countess Callori; Countess Teresa Bricherasio, via La Grange, etc., etc. These things will be very beneficial to you and to us.

12. If you need people, write immediately for both the Sisters and the Salesians; but also give your opinion on who might be suitable. Do what you can, God will do what we cannot. Entrust everything to J. C. in the Blessed Sacrament and to Mary Help of Christians and you will see what miracles are.

May God accompany you with my prayers, and every morning I will remember you all in Holy Mass.

May God bless you wherever you go; pray for me, and for your Mother, the Congregation. Amen.
