Senior Day of Entertainment
By  Joe  Rodriguez
At St. Dominic Savio Parish in
Bell ower, the Senior Day of En-
tertainment (SDE) has become
an annual event presented by the
Multi-Media Outreach Program
(MOP). But it is more than a
talent show put on by the par-
ish youth, it is an intentionally
interactive gathering with the
seniors of the parish. The pro-
gram’s focus is personal contact
with them, breaking down gener-
ational barriers. As such, seniors
are not surprised when youth
recognize them, approach them
after Mass and engage them in
conversation.
The youth of our parish are pre-
cious, gifted, talented and gener-
ous in every way. MOP helps
the young discover and develop
their gifts through various ac-
tivities like the SDE. The young
become aware of social justice
needs within our community and
parish and they nd ways to ad-
dress some of them through sim-
ple acts of kindness. In doing so
the young are formed to respond
“Doing ordinary things
extraordinarily well”
to God’s call and more prepared
to consider also religious life.
This year’s SDE gives thanks to
our youth director, Miriam Her-
nandez, a 21 year-old young lady,
one of our original MOP mem-
bers and a fomer Salesian Volun-
teer for the Salesian oratories in
Tijuana. She continues to be a
role model for the young.
We also thank our key collabo-
rators: Brother Joe Lockwood
and Elisa Pinedo for the food
that was prepared and donated
for this event, Cathy Hirshey
who donated the gifts and most
importantly, Sister Dolores Rio-
jas and Juan Carlos Montenegro,
who continue to provide their
support and encouragement.

Senior
Thank You!
By  Marie  O’Donnell
Dear Youth Ministry,
Many thanks for the wonder-
ful day you provided our seniors
today. What a wonderful group
of young people all of you are.
The band was so good. I would
like to see you on YouTube on
the computer. It’s free and they
will get lots of publicity. They
should become professionals.
All the entertainment was su-
perb, with so much e ort you put
into it. The food was so good
as well as prizes and all. I can’t
express my thanks enough. Well,
you all made my day. In fact, it
made the whole week!
So dear children, again I express
my sincere thanks and apprecia-
tion to all of you, and wish many
of God’s blessings to you all. I’m
looking forward to the next get
toether and hopefully I can be
there.
Love sincerely to you all,

Beati cation of
GIUSEPPE TONIOLO
Salesian Cooperator
On Sunday, April 29, at the ba-
silica of St. Paul’s Outside the
Walls in Rome, Prof. Giuseppe
Toniolo (1845-1918), econo-
mist and sociologist, activist in
Catholic Action, organizer of the
Catholic Social Weeks in Italy,
was beati ed. A contemporary of
Don Bosco, after having come to
know him personally, he became
a Salesian Cooperator.
Don Bosco and Blessed Toniolo
met at Pisa in May 1887. The
former was already well known as
an educator of the humble, and
the latter was becoming known
as a teacher and guide for Italian
Catholics in the social eld.
When they met Don Bosco play-
fully asked the professor to teach
him economics. Prof. Toniolo in-
sisted that the saint should send
his Salesians to Pisa, where he
lived and taught. The Salesians
were to arrive in Pisa only lat-
er, but Prof. Toniolo was so im-
pressed by the conversation that
he decided to enroll as a Coop-
erator.
Born at Treviso in 1845, thanks
to his natural gifts and applica-
tion to his studies of economics
and social problems, Giuseppe
Toniolo had a swift career as a
teacher in state institutes, and
then at 24 he was a university as-
sistant lecturer in Padua; at 34 a
lecturer in political economics at
the University of Pisa; at 37 the
professor at the same university.
A Catholic through and through,
it was a great triumph for him to
have obtained a chair in a state
university at a time when materi-
alism dominated the universities
and politics was often anticleri-
cal.
Giuseppe Toniolo dedicated all
his energies to political econo-
my, to sociology, and to statis-
tics. Such was his competence in
these areas that he was able to
challenge successfully the current
Marxist and positivist teaching.
The social teaching of the Church
had an able exponent in Toniolo
not only on the academic level
but also among the people, as
he became the leader and orga-
nizer of a magni cent movement
spreading Christian thinking and
InTouch    5 5.10.12
practice among workers.
In his view, workers needed to be
aware that they were not mere
instruments to be used as long
as they were needed or until they
wore out. Also through their
work they were fully men, and
even more, sons of God.
In the current world economic
crisis, it would seem also very
useful to draw on the depth of
thought of Blessed Giuseppe To-
niolo, Salesian Cooperator.

What a FIASCO!
By  Bro.  Joe  Lockwood,  SDB
The expected day, April 30, 2012
had nally arrived…the day
for drilling of the cylinder
hole for the elevator plung-
er. All our expectations
came tumbling down when
the drilling auger arrived
on the job site. We learned
that the requirements for
the drill auger, explained
by the Mitsubishi represen-
tative in the April 13 issue
of InTouch, were really er-
roneous.
This asco has put the
completion of the project
back at least two months.
Why? Because demolish-
ing “Bro. Jack’s old bicycle
shop” was postponed un-
til the temporary power
line is erected next to the
residence building and that
was postponed because
of the misinformation.
The contractor contacted
Southern California Edison
last week and they said that they
would schedule the installation
of the temporary power line in
12 to 14 days.
The I-beam:
Building Inspector, Mr. Ander-
son, questioned why the pour-
ing of the concrete wall and
the installation of structural
I-beams were not done in one
step. The Mitsubishi represen-
tative said the auger could not
function with structural I-beams
in place. Again the representa-
tive was wrong. The elevator pit
The 25-foot elevator plunger
could have been done in one step
instead of two. The cold joints
would have been eliminated
(when the concrete isn’t poured
all at one time) and that would
have satis ed the Building In-
spector.
The cylinder hole was drilled 25
feet deep and a berglass liner
was installed. The soil was back
lled around the cylinder, and
then the 25-foot plunger was
inserted into the cylinder. The
elevator car will be attached to
the plunger. To nish pouring
InTouch    6 5.10.12
the corners of the elevator
pit, the contractors had
to remove the back lled
soil, form the corners and
then erect the structural I-
beams.
Meanwhile. . .
The paint contractor was
busy patching all of the
holes and cracks, and pres-
sure washing the exterior
of the building. Then he
sprayed on a sealer prim-
er coat. The plastering
contractor removed all of
the old gas heater vents,
patched the vent holes
with wood and then ap-
plied stucco. The electri-
cians continued pulling out
all of the old electrical wir-
ing and running the new
ones. The electrical panel
boxes on the second and
third oors are installed but the
re proo ng around the panels
still has to be done.
But Wait!
On May 1st, the Assistant Build-
ing and Safety Director paid the
building site a visit and met with
the principal party of the proj-
ect. The group toured the third
oor and he pointed out to the
contractor and other members of
the group 14 items that are not
in compliance with the UBC.

Another issue that the contrac-
tor is facing is that the building
classi cation, once considered an
“existing structure”(meaning all
of the construction when it was
built was approved), has been
changed. When termites (as re-
ported last week) were found in
some of the structural members,
the classi cation was changed to
“non-existing”. The rami cation
of this change in classi cation
means that the City has to ap-
prove the repair.

: almost a nation
(ANS – Rome) – If it were an
independent nation, Facebook
would be in third place after Chi-
na and India in terms of popula-
tion. It would be a superpower at
world level which could aspire to
a permanent seat on UN Security
Council.
The Wall Street Journal has pub-
lished some data on the popula-
tion of the social network found-
ed by Mark Zuckerberg. On 31st
March this year, Facebook had
901 million users active during
the month, 33% higher than the
680 million on 31st March 2011.
The data was obtained from doc-
umentation provided to the Secu-
rities and Exchange Commission
(SEC) in view of the launch of
the social network on the Stock
Exchange.
Facebook has a population three
times greater than that of the
United States. Compared with
the two superpowers on the plan-
et in a demographic, but also an
economic sense, Facebook has
300 millions citizens less than
India and about 400 million less
than China. The data sent to the
SEC show a constant increase in
the number of users. During 2011
Facebook saw a growth of 72
million users (11.9%) in the rst
quarter, of 59 million (8.7%) in
the second, 61 million (8.2%) in
the third and 45 million (5.6%)
in the fourth quarter. In the rst
quarter of 2012 the increase was
56 million (6.6%).
These gures, from just one so-
cial network, demonstrate how
the ‘digital continent,’ without
geographical borders, has a real
existence. The world of com-
merce is well aware of this: the
launch of Facebook on the stock
exchange was welcomed with en-
thusiasm.

with new challenges. It’s not just
a matter of sur ng the web or
