380 Verbali Seminari ACSSA
Fr. Joseph Thekkedath SDB (Banaglore), leading Church Historian of India and
Professor of Church History of the Salesian Theological School of Kristu Jyoti, present-
ed the “Importance of Archival Documentation and State of Indian Salesian Archives”.
With this, he gave a down-to-earth situation of the Salesian Archives in India based on
his own personal experience as scholar researcher on Indian Salesian History.
In the afternoon of the same day, Fr. Mathew Kapplikunnel SDB (Salesian Pon-
tifical University) and Fr. Carlo Socol SDB (Church Historian, Hong Kong) presented
two lectures from the previous Madrid Symposium: the former, that of Prof. Em-
manuele Boaga’s “Nature and typology of documentation in religious institutes with
particular reference to the Salesians”, and the latter, that of Dr. Manuel Romero Tal-
lafigo’s “Classification and Preservation of Archival Memory”. Both, however, deliv-
ered these papers with the effort to make these comprehensible and actual to the par-
ticipants of the Chennai Symposium. Finally, Mr. Wilson Prakash, local information
technology expert, presented a paper on “Digital Imaging Technology”. He explained
how digital technology could also be useful for archival work.
The first day of the Seminar ended with a workshop. The participants were di-
vided into three groups, where they discussed issues regarding the current status of the
Salesian archives and documentation in their own places of origin. Moreover, they pre-
sented their reactions and evaluations to the papers presented that day. The results of
their discussions were later gathered and presented to the general assembly in the final
day of the Seminar. After evening prayers, Sr. Marisa Gambato FMA gave the good-
night talk, outlining the history of the FMA in Japan. After dinner, the participants
watched a video presentation regarding the manufacture of paper used for documents
in Spain.
Friday, December 21, Fr. Joseph Thekkedath, during the morning Eucharistic cel-
ebration, invited the participants “to do good” by preserving our Salesian cultural her-
itage. The morning session of the second day then began with a lecture given by Prof.
Regalado Jose Trota (Philippines) on the “Utilization of Archives for Research”.
A member of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines’ permanent commis-
sion on Church cultural heritage and a lay scholar whose expertise lied in the study of
churches and museums, Prof. Jose explained to the participants how to make their
archives a source of culture and study, and to make these available to researchers.
Afterwards, a panel made up of participants of the Seminar shared their “Expe-
rience in Archive-keeping”. Fr. Carlo Socol SDB, Fr. Samuel Mondol SDB (Kolkata),
Sr. Siriapushpam Mathew FMA (Chennai), Fr. Nestor Impelido SDB (Manila) pre-
sented the structure and content of the archives of their respective provinces. Instead,
Fr. George Maliekal SDB (Guwahati) explained the history, present situation and fu-
ture plans of Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures (DBCIC), an institute in
Mawlai, Shillong which houses a missionary and anthropological museum.
Fr. Francesco Motto ended the morning session with two interventions. He pre-
sented the norms for provincial and house archives based on the juridical and admin-
istrative practice in the government of a Salesian province. He insisted, however, that
it was necessary to up-date these norms. He then informed the audience about the more
important conclusions of the Madrid Seminar, exhorting the participants to off-set the
negative situation of most Salesian archives.
