Août 2005 August No.84
SURREY. Canada Day had Fr. Harry Rasmussen,
visiting us from Watsonville, CA, to perform a very
special wedding of one of our organists and seventh
grade teacher at OLGC School, Miss Vernice Sta
Ana. The church was packed for the 1 pm Mass and
this special occasion. Around 8:45 pm, our
generator went out with a bang putting the rectory
and our phones in the dark and out of service. Our
property was the only area affected. Perhaps a bird/
crow got “fried” in trying to roost there. By 10 pm
the electricity was back on.
Holiday Monday, July 3rd, had us all attend
the Salesian Cooperators cook out. Lots of
enjoyment, laughter and pot luck delights. Later the
Salesians privately bid farewell to Fr. Ted with a
video movie and popcorn. He was earlier presented
with a signed card, check, and book on John Paul II
from the community. Fr. Mario returned on July 6th
and Bro. Steve Aldorasi joined us for a week’s visit
on the 21st.
Meanwhile the community enjoyed a two
day outing to Victoria, BC, on July 17th thru the 18th
where they visited the Capitol buildings, waterfront,
beautiful surroundings and spent a few hours at the
noted Butchart Gardens. The weather was grand and
the BC Ferry crossing unbelievable as we saw a pod
of whales. All the while the church and rectory
roofs received new tarring and paint makeovers,
including a face lifting of the Youth Center facade.
The third week of July had the daily Masses
being said in the Don Bosco Youth Center gym
with adoration of the Blessed Sacrament during the
day. Fr. Luc arrived on the afternoon of the 26th for
a few days before returning to Montreal and seeing
to the arrangements for our up-and-coming August
retreat in Mission, BC.
Bro. Jerry left on July 28th for the 2006
Brothers’ Convention in Dallas, TX. The theme this
year is “Brothers as Collaborators in Ministry.”
Pope John Paul II in speaking to a community of
Brothers indicated that collaboration was the only
way to accomplish our mission of fostering
evangelization. The keynote speaker was Bro.
Loughlan Sofield, S.T., along with Sr. Mary
Bendyna, RSM, Executive Director of the Center for
the Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) who
presented the first public report on the “Study of
Brothers in the United States.”
The Bosco Days Bible Camp gets underway
July 31st thru Aug. 5th concluding with the Parish
Picnic at Hawthorne Park. Mrs. Margrit Garzitto is
the overseer of this creative program designed by
Liguori Publishers. Bro. Jim Zettel will be lending
his talents by his magic presence. The camp theme:
SonTreasure Island Where Kids Discover God’s
Love” (1 Cor 13). The counsellors and volunteers
have been having brain storming meetings for the
past three months in preparation for this important
event. Many are from the “God’s Little People
Sunday School catechists. They will be using bible
stories, crafts, skits, games, music and songs with a
middle of the week outing to enhance their program.
With the Chinese and Koreans renting OLGC
School for their Summer School in English, the
month of July has certainly been an active
playground, workspace and meeting place for groups
and guest missionaries to make Our Lady of Good
Counsel a “port of call.”

SHERBROOKE.

FAST! BE GOOD! HAVE FUN!»

ROME.
Don Bosco, “Da mihi animas, cetera tolle”.
Majeur, juillet-septembre 2006).

STONY POINT, N.Y. Cooperator Delegates
Meeting On July 21, 2006, 15 SDB and FMA
Salesian Cooperator delegates met at the Don Bosco
Retreat Center in Stony Point, N.Y., for a day of
study and reflection on the role of the delegate.
Provincial delegate for the Canada vice province, Fr.
Romeo Trottier, gave the keynote address, in which
he stressed what a delegate is not, what he or she is,
and the qualities of a good delegate. He then went on
to present six challenges that delegates face:
formation of Cooperators, their perseverance,
comprehension of the Cooperator vocation among
SDBs and FMAs, keeping a sense of humility,
communication, and the apostolate.

(extrait
de l’Agence Zenit, 26 juin 2006)

LEBANON. Salesian joy brings a little relief to
the children in the reception centres.
On the morning of the 25th, Fr Gajowy Kazimierz,
Rector of the Salesian house in Al Fidar, and Fr
Pozzo Vittorio met the person in charge of centres
welcoming the displaced people to assess the
situation. In the course of the meeting there was a
positive response to the idea of the youth leaders
from the Al Fidar Oratory providing entertainment
for the young refugees in the 'Amira Daou' school at
Jbeil on the evening of July 24. Those in charge of
the centre as well as the youth leaders saw the
positive effects on the children as they were cheered
up and experienced some peace and calm which
also had a positive effect on the adults. (The
experience was repeated on July 27th at the public
Haij School where dozens of children were waiting
for them: there were group games, miming songs
and dancing. More engagements are scheduled).

ITALY. Korean SDB pilgrims in Rome - RM`s
Good Night. The first group of Korean Salesians,
led by their Vice Provincial Fr Henry Bonetti, has
arrived in Rome to get in touch with their Christian
and Salesian roots. A highlight of the Rome visit
was supper and a Good Night from the Rector Major.
At the Generalate they took the by now obligatory
photo with the Rector Major and 'Don Bosco', the
relatively new life-sized bronze statue of the Founder
in the entrance hall. In his GN, Don Chavez said that
despite the fact that the Congregation has now spread
to 130 nations, the sense of charismatic unity and
fellowship is very strong, thanks to the Don Bosco-
centred life of many confreres. He went on to say
that we recognise in Don Bosco one of the most
complete of the saints, one of the most zealous. He
remarked that he has just finished reading the life of
St. Ignatius Loyola, an amazing story. He notes that
Ignatius began the Jesuits with well-prepared
graduates from the Sorbonne. Don Bosco on the
other hand began with a bunch of teenagers. He
believed in them, formed them, to the point where
one became his successor, another cardinal, and
another (who could well have been a Salesian had he
lived) the youngest non-martyr saint in the Church.
At the basis of his multiple activities for God and
Church was his zeal. It became the Rector Major's
wish, then, for this group of Korean Salesians that
they discover Don Bosco's deepest convictions as
part of this pilgrimage, especially the conviction of
giving his life for the young, believing in them,
believing in the impact of good education (values,
and the emotional, intellectual, relational
dimensions). He asked them to believe in the need to
call many more people to this youth-centred
movement.
