TORONTO-HAMILTON Joys and Sorrows

April brings many joys and sorrows to the Toronto/Hamilton community.

On Easter Monday Fr. Frank Kelly goes to New York to assist his brother, Jerry, suffering from terminal cancer. Assisted by the Sacraments and family presence and prayers, Jerry dies on Thursday, April 11. The community continues to accompany Fr. Frank and his family during this time of mourning.

Easter Week also sees some happy travel as Fr. Mike Pace brings visiting UPS Professor Fr. Francis-Vincent Anthony to Montréal to see more Canadian Salesian presences.

Fr. John Puntino, too, goes to Montréal to participate in Salesian Family Spirituality Day. He then heads west and south to visit Salesian Family groups in Ohio and Pennsylvania before attending in Detroit, Michigan, a meeting of representatives from institutes and associations sharing in the Salesian spirit of St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane de Chantal. The group is calling itself North American Salesian Network.

Excitement grows as three of Fr. Joseph Occhio’s nieces arrive on Easter Friday. Fr. Occhio’s brother and sister-in-law, Franco and Rosalia, along with two more nieces and grandnephew Fr. Michele Martinelli arrive the following Monday.

On Easter Friday the community is also pleased to welcome to dinner at St. Benedict Mrs. Elizabeth Nguyen, sister of Servant of God François Cardinal Van Thuân Nguyen, her husband, Christian Chan, and Dr. Luisa del Carmen Melo of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. Fr. Francis-Vincent arranges for the visit.

On Monday, April 8, Don Bosco Residence in Etobicoke opens its doors in welcome to Mr. Branden Gordon. He is living with the community while discerning his vocation and working as a substitute teacher. His first experience of Salesian community life includes interacting with Fr. Occhio’s eight visiting family members, Fr. Francis-Vincent and the lively community members. It does not take Branden long to see the difference between Salesian life and monastic life.

The greatest joy and blessing of the month for St. Benedict Church is the welcoming on Monday,

April 15, of the refugee family for whom the parish has been awaiting for over two years. Ahlam and her three daughters Lara, Maryam and Roz survived religious persecution in Iraq and over 3 years as refugees in Syria before receiving permission to immigrate to Canada. Before arriving, sorrow touches their lives when their husband/father, Yousef, who was already partially paralyzed because of a brutal beating in Iraq for being a Christian, passes away in Damascus, Syria, in January after sustaining injuries indirectly caused by a bomb attack. St. Benedict Church has pledged to support Ahlam and her daughters for their first year in Canada. (J.P.)

SHERBROOKE.«Va-t-il venir notre printemps ? » L’hiver hésitait à nous quitter. À la mi-avril, une dernière « bordée de neige » (les Européens vont aimer cette expression..!) Ce qui fait que notre « cabane à sucre » familiale en avril avait presque l’allure d’un party de Noël. Le printemps s’était déjà pointé le nez il y a plusieurs semaines, mais, comme la marmotte, il s’était retiré dans son terrier pour en ressortir ces derniers jours en triomphateur. Les signes sont là, même si du Salésien, on peut apercevoir les sentiers de ski du Mont Orford encore couverts de neige. Les crocus forment de belles talles violet sur la pelouse de notre résidence, les jonquilles ornent la base extérieure de notre gymnase, le magnolia de notre voisin est tout en fleurs. La venue du printemps diffuse un air de jeunesse, de renaissance. Je crois que ça touche l’âme aussi.

Le Mondo-Bosco est déjà en cours au Salésien. C’est un tournoi de soccer auquel participent les 10 groupes de la 1^e et 2^e secondaires, chacun portant le nom d’un pays. Il y a par exemple, le Yémen, l’Éthiopie, l’Irlande, l’Italie, les Iles Canaries, l’Australie, etc. Il y a aussi le Vatican, haut en couleurs avec son chandail « rouge cardinal ». Pas de défaite jusqu’à présent! Il y a même un pape pour encourager ses troupes, soutane blanche, étole rouge et Bible en main. Chaque équipe avec son chandail distinctif, c’est un festival de couleurs.

Théâtre Opsis nous a présenté deux excellentes pièces ce mois-ci, Dr. Jekyll et Monsieur Hyde et Vol au Dessus d’un Nid de Coucou. Vous vous souvenez peut-être de ce roman de Robert Stevenson et du film avec Jack Nicholson présentant l’univers de la maladie mentale. « De jeunes comédiens formidables, nous dit le feuillet de présentation, qui nous surprennent chaque fois par leur énergie et leur passion ».

G ala Sportif : une tradition depuis plus de 40 ans au Salésien. En cette occasion où on récompense les mérites de nos sportifs, on admet un/e ancien/ne élève au Temple de la Renommée. Cette année, l’honneur revenait à Phénix Beaudoin Cloutier, dont le sport est la voile.

Deux autres groupes d’élèves de la 5^e secondaire - cela clôt l’activité pour cette année scolaire- ont vécu un 24h de silence à l’Abbaye St-Benoît-du-Lac. Tout au cours de l’année une soixantaine de jeunes ont vécu cette expérience, par petits groupes de huit à la fois. Ils se disent très impressionnés et enrichis par ce séjour « chez les moines ».

Quelque 120 jeunes de l’école vivront encore cette année le Bosco-bicycle (surtout du 1^er cycle) et le Bosco 2, pour les plus âgés. C’est déjà complet et les moniteurs ont déjà commencé leur formation. Pour BB, c’est le trajet des montagnes (Mégantic, La Patrie, etc.) Et pour B2, c’est encore les Montagnes Blanches pour la 3^e sec. (USA) et la région du Lac Champlain pour la 4^e sec.. Pour chaque groupe, une semaine de plein air et de formation humaine (ex. esprit d’équipe) et chrétienne.

Le souper aux Crabes connut encore cette année un immense succès : plus de 340 invités rassemblés au gymnase. Les profits de cette activité annuelle vont à la Fondation du Salésien pour des bourses et le développement de l’institution. On a consommé plus de 800 livres de crabes des neiges et de crabes d’Alaska. Il y eut aussi quelques tirages à la fin de l’événement, dont un voyage en Europe.

Nous avons accueilli le Père Tom Dunne, notre provincial, du 23 au 27 avril. Nous avions reçu au début de mois le trésorier de la province, venu lui aussi de New Rochelle, banlieue de NY City. Le but de ce dernier était de faire connaissance avec les confrères et de prendre connaissance de la situation physique et financière de l’œuvre de Sherbrooke et du Camp Savio. Chaque année, le supérieur provincial visite chacune des communautés de son territoire. Lors de cette visite officielle qui n’est pas que passagère, il partage la vie et le ministère des membres de la communauté, examine l’état des finances et les documents qui régissent la vie et la mission communautaires, partageant avec eux certaines questions concernant la vie de la province et de la Congrégation. C’était la dernière communauté visitée en cette année scolaire. Toutes les communautés de la Congrégation- dans 132 pays du monde – préparent par la réflexion personnelle et communautaire, par la prière, et chaque province par la célébration d’un chapitre provincial  de plusieurs jours, le 27^e Chapitre Général qui se déroulera à Rome en février 2014 pendant deux mois.

Le 6 avril, les confrères de Sherbrooke et de Montréal se retrouvaient au Centre Salésien des Jeunes à Montréal pour la Journée de la Famille Salésienne. Telle rencontre a lieu deux fois l’an et a comme objectif de partager sur quelques dimensions de la Famille salésienne. Généralement l’une des 2 rencontres examine le thème annuel donné par le Recteur Majeur des sdb à la Famille salésienne. Évidemment d’autres groupes de la FS participent activement à cette journée : sœurs salésiennes, coopérateurs, ADMA, anciens/nes élèves, Volontaires de Don Bosco, etc. S’inspirant de l’Étrenne 2013 du Père Pascual Chavez, Recteur Majeur - Comme Don Bosco éducateur, offrons aux jeunes l’évangile de la joie à travers la pédagogie de la bonté » l’assemblée à voulu discerner cette pédagogie à partir des trois biographies écrites par Don Bosco lui-même sur ses élèves, Dominique Savio, Michel Magon et François Besucco. La journée s’est terminée par la célébration de l’eucharistie présidée par le p. Roméo Trottier et concélébrée par les prêtres présents. Le P. John Puntino, directeur de Toronto, et coordonnateur de la Commission provinciale de la Famille salésienne et Sr. Alphonsine Roy, déléguée fma de la FS au Canada, participaient activement à cette rencontre.

Journée de la Famille salésienne à Montréal

Chaque dernier jour du mois, nous commémorons la naissance au ciel de Don Bosco (31 janvier 1888) en exposant une relique de 1^ère classe du saint que nous avons le privilège de posséder depuis plusieurs années. Cela nous met en communion avec les membres de la Famille salésienne des autres pays qui continuent d’accueillir, l’un après l’autre, la relique majeure qui poursuit son pèlerinage de par le monde. MONTREAL. At the beginning of the month, Fr. Dennis Donovan, treasurer of our New Rochelle Province comes to visit us. The purpose of his visit is to get acquainted with the confreres and the work and to get a better knowledge of the condition of the physical plant and of our finances. He also visited the Mission Office with the same intention.

On April 6 was held our Salesian Family Day. The confreres of Montreal and Sherbrooke met at the Youth Centre together with the Salesian Sisters and a good group of Cooperators. The theme shared upon was the Rector Major’s strenna 2013: “Like don Bosco the educator, we offer young people the Gospel of joy through a pedagogy of kindness.”

In mid-April, Fr. Richard returned home after 8 weeks in hospital & rehabilitation due to his broken femur.

On the 13^th, we initiate the liturgical celebrations of Confirmation and first communions. Due to the great number of candidates, these will go on for four weeks.

Musicpalooza: Music Project at DB Youth Centre

A few days later, our Provincial, Fr. Thomas Dunne, arrived among us per la yearly official visit and spent a few days with us, meeting every confrere, parish groups, the Youth Centre collaborators as well as those at the Mission Office. From here he went for a similar visit to Sherbrooke.

On April 26, Fr. Tito left us for a month’s visit among his family in Argentina. Did you know that he attended the same Salesian school in Ramos Mejia as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, now known as Pope Francis? The same Salesians at the time of Bergoglio, writes Fr. Tito, were my superiors some 8 years later: Fr. Emilio Cantarutti, Fr. Placido Aviles, Fr. Laureano Cangiani, Bro. Federico Bernadez, etc. Colegio Vilfrid Baron, named after the family who donated the land, became Don Bosco School and next to it the Salesians established the Maria Auxiliadora parish. (E.T.)

SURREY, B.C. The first Wednesday of the month saw a full church for the celebration of a memorial Mass said by Fr. Mario for the repose of the soul of Fr. John Malloy, SDB. The regular Mother of Perpetual Help devotions were recited first, and then Bro. Jerry gave s short summary of Fr. John’s life followed by full choir participation throughout the Holy Mass. Fr. Mario gave a terrific homily built around Fr. John’s dedicated spirit and love of Christ.

Fr. Jan and the Young Adults led the Chaplet of the Divine Mercy and the Novena each evening during the first week of April. These celebrations concluded on Divine Mercy Sunday with a special afternoon service. - Bro. Jerry addressed the El Shaddai Group on the First Saturday of the month on the topic of Christian Love. There were about 50 participants.

On April 15^th the Praise Team competed in the Canadian Final Hip-Hop Dance Competition at the Michael J. Fox Theatre in Burnaby and took 1st and 2^nd places both in the Senior and Junior Divisions. Now they will be representing all of Canada at the International Hip-Hop Competition mid-August in Las Vegas. Congratulations are certainly in order for all the demanding hours and hard work that they had put into their numerous practice sessions.

The final Wednesday noon hour in April saw the birthday celebration of 4 of our staff members … Mrs. Louise Molina, Mrs. Diane Craig, Mr. Moses Bail and Mr. Senan Alcos honoured with all the trimmings. Home made soup and salad created by Br. Jerry, along with the decorated cards and gifts added to the party atmosphere as well as the enjoyed Birthday Cake.

One of the outstanding events for this month was the Parish Fiesta. The Feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel was celebrated on the last Saturday of April with a special Concelebrated Mass. Fr. Mario was the main celebrant with 5 other priests in attendance. For 9 days leading up to the feast, we had a daily novena and also an extra evening Mass. After the Mass, Our Lady of Good Counsel School Choir took their places in front of the main altar and sang two outstanding song selections to an overflowing crowd in church. Pot luck, music and dance numbers by our Praise Team filled the Don Bosco Gym.

Our priests heard about one hundred First Confessions of our youngsters in preparation for their receiving of First Communion come May 11^th. - Finally, Fr. Dave along with Mr. Gerard Wright, OLGC School Principal (who gave a witness talk to the 12^th grade students of Holy Cross High School during their two day retreat); the Holy Mass concluded this special event. It was held and conducted at the Stillwood Retreat Center near Cultus Lake.

Catechetical Sisters of Mary Immaculate Help of Christians, Mother Teresa and “Father Bishop” Louis LaRavoire Morrow

In the late 1940’s when Blessed Teresa of Calcutta was following the Lord’s inspiration to found in India a congregation of sisters who would work and dress in the Indian fashion, she visited Salesian Bishop Louis LaRavoire Morrow, who founded the Catechetical Sisters of Mary Immaculate Help of Christians in Krishnagar. Bishop Morrow’s sisters wore as their habit a white sari with a trim of blue stripes.

Mother Teresa asked Bishop Morrow if she could imitate the habit of his sisters. He, of course, had no objections. She then modified it to bring it more into the Bengali style worn in Calcutta.

The Catechetical Sisters of Mary Immaculate Help of Christians, Sisters of Mary Immaculate for short, were accepted a part of the Salesian Family in 1992.

In North America they operate a catechetical center and senior care facility in Leechburg, Pennsylvania.

Bishop Louis LaRavoire Morrow, affectionately called Father Bishop by his sisters, was born in Texas and grew up in Mexico where he became a Salesian. As the priest secretary of Salesian Bishop Guglielmo Piani, he accompanied Bishop Piani when he was chosen in 1922 to be Apostolic Delegate to the Philippines. From there Fr. Morrow was chosen in 1939 as bishop of Krishnagar in Northeast India. (J.P.)
