India gains tenth province - Panjim raised
from vice province to province
ROME: 18th June 2007 -- The Rector Major with his Council last
week accepted the request of the superior of the vice province of Panjim with
his council to be raised to the status of a province. Fr Loddy Pires is
the provincial.
The INP province was set up as a vice province on 31st
August 2004, detaching itself from Mumbai province (INB) and forming the
circumscription of Konkan. In fact the area covered by the
circumscription includes Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. Panjim is part
of Goa. The provincial House is located at Odxel.
INP province, which bears the name of its patron Blessed
José Vaz, has a total of 93 members plus 10 novices for this year. 57 of
the 93 are priests, 8 Brothers and 28 are students for the priesthood.
The average age of the province is 41.8 years. Goa has by far the largest
number of confreres, nearly half of the province being located in 9 presences.
The provinces involves a full range of Salesian works, from
normal schools to schools for young people in difficulties or who have missed
out on formal education. Each of the States in the province has one or more
non-formal education centres, parishes and mission stations as well as centres
for vocational guidance. The province has commissions for each of the
main areas of the Salesian mission: formation, youth ministry, Salesian Family,
Social Communication, Finance
