Tura under curfew: one past pupil died, the other in
critical condition
TURA (North East India, ING Salesian province): 2nd October 2005
-- As matters become a little clearer, and with direct information from
local sources, it appears that one Don Bosco College past pupil
died on Friday, and a second is in a critical condition. At least
nine people were shot dead on Friday as police opened fire on student
demonstrators in two locations in the Garo Hills area. The
deceased past pupil, to be remembered in prayer worldwide by the
Association of Past Pupils of Don Bosco, is Daniel M. Sangma. He
was, at this stage, a current BSc student of Tura Government College.
He was buried on Saturday in Williamnagar, his home town.
The other boy, Elius Sangma, was critically injured, suffering gunshot
wounds, and is in hospital. Both young men were taking part in
the protest rally.
Garo Students Union have called for a protest day on
Monday. Meanwhile the city is under struct curfew. The
Mehalaya Governor has express his shock and pain at the deaths of
innocent civilians. The Government has offered financial
compensation to those families who have been bereaved, but as one
mother said, "Do you think compensation can make up for my child's
loss?"
