Samoan Salesian to be ordained deacon tomorrow

MELBOURNE: 7th July 2006 --  Preparations are complete for the ordination to diaconate in Melbourne tomorrow of Solomona Pouniu Paulo, from Samoa.  'Mona, as he is commonly known, will be ordained by Archbishop Dennis Hart, archbishop of Melbourne.
In the 26 years of Salesian presence in Samoa, there has been a steady vocational growth for the Salesians, to the point where there are now six Samoan born Salesian priests and several others either now at the diaconate stage or close to it.  There is one Salesian Brother residing at Alafua, near Apia in Samoa.  The Rector of the community in Samoa is a Samoan, as is the principal of the technical college.  Other young Samoan Salesians and prenovitiate candidates are spread throughout the stages of formation in Samoa, Fiji and Australia.  At least two of the Samoan priests have begun or are about to begin advanced studies in educational and youth leadership for the planned expansion of work in those Pacific Islands served by the Australian Province.
