Salesians in Samoa mark
out their 150th celebrations path
APIA: 19th January 2009 -- Salesians in the Pacific Islands
nation of Samoa are planning to mark the 150th anniversary of the
founding of the Salesian Congregation in a variety of ways which they
consider will have the greatest impact on the young people, staff,
families and friends who are associated with them. Due to the
prominence of the Salesian work in that nation (significant parishes on
both main islands, an outstanding technical school and centre, and the
Chancellor of the Archdiocese a Salesian), these events are considered
to touch the lives of many Samoans, one way or another.
The Salesian parish of Leauva'a also contains the Tofamamao
Pastoral Centre for the Archdiocese. This will be the setting for a
seminar for teachers of the Don Bosco Technical Centre on teacher
development and the Preventive System. Input for three of the sessions,
says Fr Petelo Vito Pau, the Rector of the Salesian community, will be
provided by Bro Michael Lynch, who coordinates the Australian Salesian
Missions Overseas Aid Fund, and is a former secondary school principal
and principal of a University College. Members of the Samoa
Qualification Authority will also be running sessions on the new
guidelines for Samoa Qualification.
The Archbishop of Apia, Alapati Matailiga, together with priests
and religious in the archdiocese, will join the Salesians at Don Bosco
Alafua for Mass and a meal on January 31st, to mark the opening of the
150th 'Year of Grace'. On the same day a new kindergarten at the Don
Bosco Sinamoga/Moamoa Parish will be officially blessed and opened. Fr
Mikaele Leilua sdb, parish priest, was able to secure overseas funds
for this new project.
The students from Don Bosco Tech will celebrate the anniversary on
August 16th, Don Bosco's birthday. While arrangements for the
celebrations have yet to be finalised, they will centre on the
Eucharist, dramatic performances and games.
