Artemides (Boretto, Reggio Emilia, 12 October 1880 – Viedma, Argentina, 15 March 1951) emigrated to Argentina with his family at the beginning of 1897, settling in Bahia Blanca where he attended the parish run by the Salesians. At the age of twenty he was accepted by Bishop John Cagliero as a Salesian aspirant and entered the house at Bernal, where he was entrusted with the task of assisting a young priest suffering from tuberculosis, from whom he also contracted the disease. Sent for treatment at the San José hospital in Viedma, he met Father Evasio Garrone. Together with him, he asked and obtained from Mary Help of Christians the grace of being healed, and promised to dedicate his entire life to the care of the sick. In 1908 he made his perpetual profession as a Salesian Coadjutor Brother. He began to look after the pharmacy attached to the hospital and later assumed responsibility for the hospital. As a “Good Samaritan” he was absolutely dedicated to the sick, recognizing in them the face of Christ. Following in the footsteps of Don Bosco he made Providence the first and secure entry in the budget for his works. Saint John Paul II proclaimed him Blessed on 14 April 2002 and Pope Francis listed him in the register of saints on 9 October 2022.

Refreshed, O Lord,
by the sweetness of the sacrament of our redemption,

we may also become partakers of his glory.

Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. ‘Teacher,’ he said, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ He said to him, ‘What is written in the law? What do you read there?’ He answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.’And he said to him, ‘You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.’
But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbour?’ Jesus replied, ‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
But a Samaritan while travelling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Prayer of the Faithful

Saint Artemides Zatti
Let us turn to God in prayer through the intercession of St Artemides Zatti so that Christ, who came into the world to evangelize the poor and heal the contrite of heart, may also bring salvation to those who await him as Redeemer today.
R. Lord, hear our prayer.
1. For the Church: show all those who suffer in body and spirit the charity of Christ the Good Samaritan who brought grace and healing to all who were prisoners of evil. We pray to the Lord.
2. For the Salesian Family: that it may renew its commitment of dedication to its educational and pastoral mission, imitating St Artemides Zatti who was close to every human being afflicted in body and spirit. We pray to the Lord.
3. For all the sick and for all those who work in health care: may the witness of St Artemides, educator to the faith at times of trial and illness, be an inspiring source of charity and availability to love of neighbour. We pray to the Lord.
4. For vocations: may Artemides Zatti’s witness of holiness inspire a renewed commitment to fostering vocations to consecrated life, and in particular that of the Salesian coadjutor brother. We pray to the Lord.
5. For all who are gathered at this Eucharistic Assembly: may the original witness to Salesian holiness by Artemides Zatti, spent in welcoming and caring for the poor, be for us a sign and a message of how to live the high standard of ordinary Christian life. We pray to the Lord.
6. Other intentions.
We thank you, Father. for calling Artemides Zatti, a Salesian coadjutor brother, to be a good Samaritan in the service of the poor and the sick. Help us to live the Gospel faithfully and to be authentic witnesses of your love. Through Christ our Lord.
