10 On the road with Don Bosco – notes for preparation

11 Dear friends!,

12 In the first place warm greetings from Rome, in the 'Salesian' month of the 2009 Salesian Holy Year. As you are already aware, as part of our return to Don Bosco, the Rector Major has launched a world pilgrimage of Don Bosco. On our journey towards the Bicentenary in 2015 our Father and Founder's remains will go first to the American Continent. I am sending you some indications and advice to facilitate the preparations for this important event, ideas that have come up during our preparatory meetings in Rome.

All the logistics for the Pilgrimage have been entrusted to the Turin Mission Office (Fr. Pier Luigi Zuffetti, info@missionidonbosco.org) who is working with the Bertoli Company: Mr. Roberto Bertoli (roberto.bertoli@aplogistic.it). Provincials will be contacted by them for all technical aspects.

  1. For each province it would be good to establish, then let the Regional Councillor know about:

  • The detailed route within the Province (places, dates), fitting within dates agreed on at regional level

  • A confrere to accompany Don Bosco's Casket throughout the entire 'journey' through the province, along with staff belonging to the firm (name, email, mobile)

  • A confrere who will manage the arrival of the Casket at the borders of the province (name, Email, mobile)

  • Possibilities for assisting Bertoli & Co. with customs matters in countries where this is likely to be difficult

  1. During the pilgrimage in the Province

  • The Casket will be transported in two trucks belonging to Bertoli & Co. which are specially fitted out for the purpose.

  • Please offer food and lodgings to the two lay people (driver and one in charge) wherever the pilgrimage takes them. Instead Mr. Bertoli will arrive at the borders of each country of his own accord early enough to guarantee passage without too much difficulty.

  1. A Pilgrimage is an ecclesial event. To avoid untoward events, please advise the respective local bishops by letter, wherever Don Bosco's relics will be going, explaining the context and purpose of the Pilgrimage. From experience we have of the relics of St Dominic Savio, some bishops asked us to alter the route so that it included the Cathedral of the diocese.

  1. Materials. To facilitate the educational and pastoral aspect each Province will receive some materials (Part I, Part II, Part III ) at the end of February 2009.

  1. Media. It would be convenient for each Province to take the occasion to spread knowledge of Don Bosco in the Church and local society (TV, radio, press, Internet and other media). At the same time it would be good to let ANS know of events associated with the pilgrimage in the Province.

We are awaiting some ANS materials, a DVD from Missioni Don Bosco Turin in 7 languages for catechetical and media use.

Don Bosco0s journey will begin from Turin in 2009 and finish in January 2014. Attached are times for specific Salesian Regions.
