Friend of the Young and
the Poor
Steve Schenck’s lively
and kid friendly song,
“Friend of the Young and
the Poor,” takes on a new
poignancy now that its
composer has gone to
the Salesian Garden. I
can think of no better
tribute to Steve’s life than
the words of his own
song:
You were the light in
the dark for the young
who could not see. And
you were a spark for the
young to become all they
could be. Help us all come
to be all God calls us to
be. . .
You felt the fire in the
heart of the Lord who
burns with love. And
you touched the heart
of the young with that
fire from above. Touch
our hearts with that
fire, make our God our
desire. . .
You showed the young
they were called to the
service of their Lord.
You taught them to
walk in the light and
the power of His Word.
Help us walk in that
light, make His Word
our delight. . .
We will send the mes-
sage. We will be the
witnesses that you, Don
Bosco, are the friend of
the young and the poor.
Lead us safely through
the storm to the heav-
enly shore.
Sincerely,
Rev. Timothy Ploch,

Bosco Fest 2012
I Am Salesian
& I Am Don Bosco today!
Benito Guerrero
At the opening of Bosco
Fest 2012 held at Sale-
sian High in Richmond,
the youth animators and
group leaders stood up
one by one accepting the
challenge to continue
the legacy entrusted to
us by our beloved Don
Bosco. The challenge set
forth is to bring others
closer to God through a
sense of joy and cheer-
fulness.
While there’s still lots
of work to be done, I
5 11-15-2012
whole-heartedly feel
that we are on the right
path. That was evident
while looking at the
exuberance of the young
people that gave up
their weekend to take
part in this Salesian
event. There were over
200 youth from all over
California in attendance
and eager to partake in
the day’s activities. The
energy, sense of family,
and overall excitement
was palpable.
The keynote speaker,
Michael Pritchard, a
comedian from the
San Francisco area
lead off the day with a
truly inspirational talk.
Masterfully, he was able
to combine his talent of
humor and knowledge
of Church teaching to
relay a truly poignant
message. Using his
real life examples, Mr.
Pritchard was able to
convey how important
it is for each of us to live
out the greatest com-
mandment -- to love
God and neighbor. One
of the most touching
stories he shared was
an encounter with one
of his special needs
students. Mr. Pritchard
explained that they were
at a track event and as
the special needs stu-
dent approached the
finish line, she suddenly
stopped just before
crossing it. Michael was
on the other side coax-

1.6 Page 6

Bosco Fest 2012
ing her to cross in order to finish
the race but the student wouldn’t
budge. No matter how much
coaxing/pleading, the student
remained still. Michael asked her
why she didn’t want to cross the
finish line and she replied that she
wanted to wait for her friends.
Just then, she reached back her
arm and joined hands with the
next racer, the next racer did the
same and so on until they were
all linked hand in hand and they
crossed the finish line together.
After crossing the finish line, she
looked at Michael and said, “See
Mr. Pritchard, together...we all
win!” To her, it wasn’t important
if she came in first, second or
last, but that she was able to be
there for her friends and in that
they would all be winners. I was
so moved by that story and kept
replaying it in my mind through-
6 11-15-2012
out the day.
Later, we gathered in our small
groups for sharing and reflec-
tion. I enjoyed hearing the youth
share their thoughts regarding the
keynote address and the ques-
tions we were given. I was able to
share with the young people in my
group how much I admire their
generation. They encounter so
many more obstacles than when
I was their age, especially the
barrage of technology. However,
I also advised them that while the
advancement of technology can
be good, they mustn’t lose sight
of the importance of the face to
face connection with others. Also
inspiring was witnessing how ac-
cepting they were of each other’s
differences and in hearing the
challenges that they themselves
face in trying to bring joy to oth-
ers. As the adult members of the
Salesian Family, we must continue
to provide a good example to the
youth and accompany them in
their times of anguish and hap-
piness, so that they can be better
equipped to share their experi-
ences with their peers in order to
fortify our Salesian Spirituality.
And in doing so together, we too
can all win!

DE SALES HALL
It is exciting to see . . . . . .
Brother Joseph Lockwood, SDB, reporting from de Sales Hall
It was so nice to see so many trades finishing up their part of the con-
struction.
The electricians from Juno Electric were making the final adjustments
in the electric panel boxes and checking to make sure all the lights work
properly. They checked the 220 plugs for the AC/heating units in the
bedrooms and in the community rooms. Frank, the Juno Electric job
supervisor, met with Frs. Jose Lucero, Paul Tran (Director) and Tuan
Nguyen about the electrical control panel that operates the hallway lights
and outside security lights.
I must say, the hallways and the rooms really look good with the laminat-
ed floors, the wood base boards and the student desks with the bulletin
board. And they are very functional.
Mitsubishi’s technicians were on
site to calibrate the conveyance so
it will stop level at each floor with
the passengers. The maximum
weight that this conveyance can
carry is 5,000 pounds. To check
the maximum weight, they used
two wheel carts (see the pic-
ture) each weighing roughly 600
pounds. These carts are placed
in the car while it moves between
floors. All of the safety features
(telephone, alarm bells and the

three safety doors that close when the alarm goes off) are checked
and then certified that they work. When they finish checking the
safety elements and the conveyance is calibrated, the technicians
will notify the State of California Industrial Relation, Division of
Occupational Safety and Health to come out to the site and certify
that the conveyance is safe. Then the State issues the certificate.
United System (the fire alarm company) was on site installing all of
the strobe lights and smoke detectors in each bedroom, the chapel
(4), dining room, and hallways. The technicians connected the
window smoke detectors. On each floor a fire alarm power supply
box was installed in the data closets. When the technicians finish
testing the equipment, the Los Angeles Fire Marshall will inspect
the fire safety of the building. The evacuation plan for each room
has been completed and is ready to be posted in each room.
You remember that there was a roof leak over the community
room. Vincor gave us a bid to repair the roof where they thought
the leak was. After removing the existing roofing material from
the suspected area, they decided to replace the complete roof at no
extra cost to us.
The roofing contractor removed the existing roofing material down
to the plywood sheathing and inspected it to see if there was any
dry rot or any other water damage. They did not find any, the
plywood sheathing was sound. The roofers replaced all of the roof
jacks before tacking down the 30 pound felt. Once the felt is in
place, then the roofers hot mop over the felt with hot tar. Then
they put another layer of felt and repeat the same process. Then
they put the cap sheet over the hot tar.
The flooring company is finishing the installation of the non-slip
flooring material on the two stair cases. The chapel carpeting is
installed.
The plumbers have finished installing the coffee counter sink in the
dining room and the counter sink in the community room.
Part of the finishing is to do a thorough cleaning of the building
and that means to wash all of the windows, clean the floor and
check for little nicks and marks on the walls. The cleaning began
on the third floor this week.
The basketball back board is installed and ready for a half-court
game, even at night with the great court lights.

Education & Evangelization:
Boys & Young Men
12 11-15-2012
For the Salesian Family, the entire academic year
2012-2013 is dedicated to the study of St. John
Bosco’s Educational Methodology, a Salesian
Pedagogy. Therefore, the Institute of Salesian
Studies is offering two week-long intensive
courses. The first week presents a pedagogical
approach to the education and evangelization of
girls & young women, and the second week for
boys & young men.
Although these two weeks of courses stand on
their own, the two weeks are designed to compli-
ment each other. You may register for one or two
weeks.
Week One
Sr. Ann Cassidy, FMA draws upon the research of
contemporary educators, as well as her own years
of experience, to highlight the effectiveness of
Salesian pedagogy, as well as to tailor its educa-
tional methods to the education of girls & young
women.
Week Two
Fr. John Serio, SDB, tailors his course toward the
Salesian educational and evangelical approach
for boys & young men.
