Newsletter for Salesian Missionary Animation
A Publication of the Missions Sector for the Salesian Communities and Friends of the Salesian Mission
D ear brothers, dear friends,
Enlightened by the Strenna 2016, with Jesus, we journey together this missionary ad-
venture with the Spirit. For this reason the Rector Major invited us this year to educate our-
selves and the young to be able to listen and appreciate silence; to cultivate the contem-
plative capacity of allowing ourselves to be surprised and to be capable of admiration.
“These skills have to be proposed and practiced,” says Fr. Ángel.
It always impresses us that great missionaries were assiduous contemplatives and at
the same time, like the great contemplatives, they have lived their ordinary daily filled
with missionary spirit. Just recall St. Francis Xavier and St. Therese of the Child Jesus, or
closer to us, Saints Luigi Versiglia and Callixtus Caravario, Fr. Luigi Bolla.
If we had a little more silent prayer, would
there be perhaps more missionary vocations? It is
interesting to note - and enjoy ‘on site’! - how, in
our two missionary aspirantates in India (Sirajuli
and Pernambur), personal prayer, lectio divina,
daily meditation, occupy a very strategic space in
the formation program of these generous youth.
Let us continue our adventure of the Spirit!

The Faculty of Theology of the Salesian
Pontifical University in Rome, with the
support of the SDB Missions Sector, offers the 20th
Ongoing Formation Course on Missionary Pastoral
Ministry from September 26 to December 15,
2016.
The course offers a plan for personal growth,
for deepening the Christian message and for the re-
newal of pastoral ministry, through a series of initi-
atives that include activities, lessons, moments of
sharing and reflection.
For Salesian participants the course begins
with a pilgrimage to the Salesian Holy Places and
participation in the giving of the missionary cross to
members of the 147th missionary expedition at Val-
docco. The last week will take place in the Holy
Land as pilgrims in order to deepen biblical and
Christological themes.
The medium of instruction of the course
will be Italian. Hence, those who have no com-
mand of the Italian language are required to at-
tend the language course from June, according to
one’s personal needs. For Salesians, please contact:
Fr. Martín Lasarte of the Missions Sector
(mlasarte@sdb.org).

As a newly ordained bishop, the Servant of God Msgr. Stephen Ferrando (1885-
1978), a missionary in India, founder of the Missionaries of Mary Help of Chris-
tians, wrote to the Rector Major, Fr. Peter Ricaldone: “Beloved Father, on No-
vember 10 I was consecrated bishop. I bless Almighty God who has looked upon
my smallness so that in me his mercy may shine forth. I am a bishop, a Salesian
Bishop and I have no other desire but to honour my mother, the Congregation
to whom I owe everything [...] I can only recommend to your paternal heart the
beloved Krishnagar mission”.
Salesian Missionary Intention
That the Salesian Family may be the source of solid and fruitful inspiration
for Christian families everywhere.
The charism of Don Bosco was born in the context of the family: that of Becchi, sustained
and enlightened by the presence of Mamma Margaret; that of Valdocco, firmly developed
by our father and founder, clearly with the youth perspective. The challenges highlighted
by the last two synods on the family, have strengthened in the members of the Salesian
Family this urgent responsibility to accompany our young people, in all continents, in the
beautiful discovery of the vocation to marriage and family, and to be able to support
them on their journey to form consistent Christian families.
