New B.A. Course in Cebu fast-tracked by Philippines Higher Education Commission

CEBU: 11th June 2008 --  austraLasia #2155 describes the fact that the Don Bosco Formation Centre and the Don Bosco Technology Centre in Talisay City near Cebu are "
moving step by step to realize a vision of establishing an Institute for Salesianity and Spirituality to cater to the needs of Salesians, seminarians, lay people and religious.  The two houses have partnered to introduce a new tertiary degree course: a Bachelor in Arts with Majors in Religious Education and Pastoral Communication".
The good news now is that the formal proposal to achieve this, submitted on May 28 to the Director of the Commission on High Education Regional Office, has been approved.  Furthermore, the request to commence the course this year for the 2008-09 academic year has also been approved.  The course will initially be offered to the first year seminarian group.
The move comes from the felt need to provide a more formative environment for Salesian candidates/aspirants but is open to lay people and other religious congregations locally-based: to design a curriculum that lines up with the needs of the pastoral work they are choosing to go into; to emphasize a more relevant evangelization and education through communication.
This means, amongst other things, that the emerging entity  joins the ranks of some thirty or so Centres for Formation to Social Communication which the Congregation has established around the world. Some of these focus only on communications, others have communications as a significant element in their total offering, as this new Centre will now have. Last year, in Sao Paulo, these Centres met together for the first time, and drafted strategies for common vision and action.  One result will be the First International Conference on Free/Libre Open Source Software and the Democratisation of Knowledge, to be held at the Universidad Politecnica Salesiana at Quito in October this year.
