5409(I)_Homage to Archbishop Franceso Panfilo SDB

DBTI Boroko East (Port Moresby), Papua New Guinea, 26 June 2020 -- Last June 19, 2020 Pope Francis accepted the resignation presented to him by Archbishop Francesco Panfilo, S.D.B., from the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese of Rabaul for having reached the age limit.

Thank you Archbishop Panfilo for what you have done for the people of this beautiful nation. You have travelled far and wide through your Archdiocese and assisted our people in so many ways. Seeing some of the footage of this video breaks my heart to realise that you are now leaving the people for whom you gave your life. Now I take this challenge to follow your example because as a Papua New Guinean, I am equally responsible to serve the needy. You are our inspiration. We know you personally here in DBTI and what you have done is priceless. You have come to the aid of poor children to have an education, you have helped local parishioners. You gave a lot of support and education the people in Pomio District who have been affected by the logging company's destruction of their environment.

You walked, travelled by air on planes and choppers, and sailed on boats even on rough seas just to serve the people entrusted to your pastoral care. You are from another country but your love for the people of our country is beyond compare. I am speechless. All we can do now is to let ourselves be inspired by your example and become bosconians who are truly Servant Leaders of our people.

God bless you and we wish you well in the next chapter of your life.
