Interesting and informative development in Cambodia

SIHANOUKVILLE: 30th November 2009 -- From time to time interesting materials or links come our way.  It is worth sharing one of these here.  We know that over several years now Don Bosco Sihanoukville has been developing a Communications Centre.  They have big ambitions for this, both in terms of what they hope to achieve for young people in Cambodia - and indeed are achieving - and for what they hope to be able to do for the wider Salesian Family now developing in Cambodia.  They hope, for example, to be in a position in the not too distant future, to begin a Salesian Bulletin in Khmer language.
Fr Al Rodas, a 'past pupil' incidentally, of a valuable intensive social communications course offered to all students who pass through the Ratisbonne 'Studium Theologicum' in Jerusalem, now directs the Communications Centre, and has begun to prepare his students for video production, amongst other things. He aims eventually to involve students in a broad range of multimedia production, and already the first batches of students are being snapped up by local media enterprises.
Fr Al has sent along a YouTube link for one of the first productions and it is of interest for a number of reasons.  You get an excellent insight into what is being achieved in Don Bosco Sihanoukville: the level of achievment in English skills, for example, in addition to interviewing skills and video production.  The interviewer starts out in English and does very well. He later breaks into Khmer but we are provided with subtitles, so the viewer does not lose out.  But there is another reason why this interview might be of wider interest.  The interviewee is a German volunteer who has spent five years in Cambodia.  He is a 'senior' volunteer - a number of countries offer services of this kind, that is they attract retired professionals who are prepared to give some time in circumstances where their skills and experience can be invaluable.  Hans Kuechle is one such.
Provinces in the Region who are now running Volunteer or Missionary Programs may find this small effort both informative and interesting.
