Vietnam moves into publishing
5 June 2014 -- With official permission from the State Publishing House, Salesian Vietnam has gone into publishing aimed at both general readership (Don Bosco Magazine, pictured left) and various publications to help catechists, including Vietnamese translations of materials from Elledici (again with due permission, this time from Elledici). Fr Bruno Ferrero might go down as the most published Salesians - other than Rector Majors! - of modern times, in as many languages as you can think of.  He is hugely popular in Eastern Europe and it is interesting to see that he is now able to appeal to Vietnam.

The Don Bosco Magazine (Chuyen De Don Bosco - and we apologize for not including all the accents ont his and subsequent titles) currently has a 3,500 print run per edition. Can we assume it is a monthly edition? That info was not provided.

Word & Life (Loi & Cuoc Song), a title already developed and made popular by the Philippines North Province out of Makati, currently has a print run of 4,000 but this is constantly growing. It is aimed at catechists and already goes out to 5 dioceses where it is very much appreciated.

The Soc. Com Vietnam team is also busy translating and publishing titles from Elledici, especially ones that might appeal to a broader public and again to catechists. It is in this context that Fr Bruno Ferrero's material seems to be popular here too.  Note that this item is the work of an FMA, so good indications of useful cooperation in the publishing area are evident.

Just as obvious when you think about it, is the fact that behind all this work is an intense translation effort.  Vietnam stands tall in this regard, though it is not the only Province in the Region that has a well-organised team working on this area. Significant translations of Salesian material are being done also in Thai, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (certainly Cantonese), Tetum, Bahasa Indonesia, Mongolian, some too in Khmer ...
