FIN YOUTH CHALLENGE: GO GLOBAL!

MAKATI: 20 August 2008. DIWANG BUSKO -- NO to Fraternities; ACCEPTANCE of Gays; CARE for the Environment and PARTICIPATION in Youth Exchange Programs were the four concrete expressions of the FIN Youth going global challenge of Fr. Eli Cruz, SDB FIN Provincial Superior at the annual Student Leaders' Assembly on August 15 and 16 2008, celebrating Mary's Assumption and Don Bosco's birthday hosted by the Caritas Don Bosco School, Santa Rosa, Laguna run by the Caritas Sisters of Miyasaki.
In their first major gathering and encounter with the newly installed SDB Provincial, youth leaders from the different Don Bosco schools in the Philippine North Province were led to reflect on these four areas of concern through a refreshing and insightful presentation.
Campus Fraternities have in the past decades become notorious in the Philippines for initiation rights that have become violent, resulting in alarming incidents leading to disabilities and even death among their recruits. In opening up to the world, Salesian youth are forewarned to stay clear of these fraternities.
Distinguishing immoral homosexual acts from an amoral gay orientation, acceptance of and respect for gay companions equally gifted and called to holiness in life became the second challenge of opening up to the realities and wider opportunities of our world today.
Caring for the environment, a truly global concern today, begins with the smallest act of conscientiously picking-up of litter that sadly remains scattered at the end of every break time on campus. Humble beginnings lay the foundation for attain greater goals.
Student Exchange Programs have proven to benefit those who have had the opportunity to participate in them. Encouraged by this, Salesian youth are challenged to take seriously these opportunities to broaden their world as they interact with fellow youth as visitors or as hosts.
After these well received challenges, the youth leaders went into smaller group reflections give flesh to these challenges and to present their views in a ten-frame creative drama power point presentation, an activity that stirred excitement and creativity among the media-savvy youth leaders.
Following a light quickly shared meal, the young leaders plunged into group scavenger field games, unto the evening of awesome audio-visual presentations of their reflections and a evening of song, power dance, and band acts leading up to the count-down and fireworks at midnight to celebrate Don Bosco's 193rd birthday. Festivities concluded with a Mass in Honor of St. John Bosco the following morning.
