An attractive programme of life: Da mihi animas cetera tolle - and Exploring Salesian Ethos

SHILLONG/CELBRIDGE: 11th February 2007 -- An enterprising Salesian, Fr Joseph Puthenpurakal (alias PV), director of Don Bosco Publications DBCIC at Sacred Heart College in Shillong, has put together a 159 page book on a number of the key concepts for the forthcoming 26th General Chapter of the Congregation to be held in Rome early 2008. The title, An Attractive Programme of Life: Da mihi animas cetera tolle, is a kind of handbook of preparation for the Chapter themes.  Accordingly it takes up some of the terms and expands on them - of particular interest to his own region, but obviously with wider implications, is the concept of 'mission', involving the 'missionary', 'evangelizing mission', 'mission ad gentes'.  The book is a Scriptural-spiritual-Salesian meditation on the main Chapter theme. It has a useful appendix, several charts and a biography. It is available for approximately US$10, inclusive of postage, from either the Manager, DBCIC Publications, Sacred Heart College Mawlai 793 008 Shillong, Meghalaya, India, or contact jputhen@gmail directly.
An equally enterprising group, this time, the Ethos Group of the Salesian Leadership Teams in the Irish Province, has just published an attractive booklet called Exploring Salesian Ethos. While the cover quickly locates the effort as European, its contents are in no way 'European' (other than some references to the Irish province and its history), but universally Salesian.  In fact, this reader would suggest that it is an absolutely ideal item for presenting the Salesian ethos to lay people who work alongside us, anywhere. Because its genesis is Irish, understandably one or two photos are from that province but all the other very beautiful illustrations will 'work' anywhere. It is the 'ethos' content in particular that is valuable, and it has the benefit of coming first-hand from an English-speaking context without the inevitable linguistic contortions deriving from translation no matter how good it is. There is a useful Summary, a Glossary and helpful reference material, some of which is available through Don Bosco Media at Celbridge, Co. Kildare, who are promoting this latest item. There is no direct indication of cost; it would not be too great and no doubt something attractive could be organised through Fr Pat Egan at the Salesian Community, Celbridge, Co. Kildare, Ireland, Fax (01) 630.36.01 or email  frpegan@iol.ie
Coming up tomorrow - an invitation to participate in a translatathon!  In fact the translations are already done but are there for you to make minor improvements - if you want to take a peek, go here.
