2252 Synod on Word
austraLasia #2252

Further follow-up on the forthcoming Synod

ROME: 12th September 2008 -- Additional information concerning the Synod on The Word is coming in, and this also offers us an opportunity to 'elevate' Cardinal Farina to his rightful ecclesiastical rank!  He was inadvertently referred to as an 'archbishop' in #2250.
There is an eighth bishop with intimate Salesian connections, one of four delegates to the Synod from the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines. Bishop Broderick S. Pabillo was a Salesian until just before he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Manila, and the esteem and affection that is mutually felt between Bishop Pabilla and the Salesians of both Philippines Provinces is evident.  He is a frequent participator and contributor to Salesian retreats and seminars, and in July of this year (cf. #2205) gave the keynote address to a theological symposium organised by the Don Bosco Centre of Studies on the Synod theme, The Word of God in the life and mission of the Church. The symposium was entitled 'Word and Life', (which also happens to be the title of a magazine produced by the Salesians in Makati). Other speakers included Fr Jean-Louis Ska SJ on the role of the Torah in the covenanted community of Israel, Fr Gil Alinsangan SSP on St Paul's proclamation of the Word in the early Christian communites, and Sr Miriam Alejandrino OSB on Breaking the Word of God in the Church of the Poor. This latter title refers specifically to the Church in the Philippines as promulgated in the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines in 1991.
The symposium was attended by over a thousand participants, and took place at the St John Bosco Parish Church.
This is also a good opportunity to recall a second symposium with Salesian involvement (cf. #2134) held in Jerusalem early this year. A highlight of this event was the riveting address of Bishop-emeritus of Ivrea, bishop Luigi Bettazzi, at 84 one of the few remaining 'Fathers' of Vatican II. Other contributors at this symposium were the Dean of the Studium Theologicum Salesianum, Fr Robert Spataro, and the Salesian Postulator General, Fr Enrico dal Covolo.
