Get that news rolling again!

JERUSALEM: 16th April 2008 -- Time to get that news rolling again guys!  After the Chapter, understandably, and after a never-ending stream of news coming from just one place, 'the centre' (but not of the universe, never fear!), most of the usual channels went quiet in deference to GC26.  Now we have to kick-start the effort again.  Your 'Rome correspondent' is willing, but he's not keen to be writing or inventing all the news from here on!  Besides, he's not in Rome but that is no impediment to sending out austraLasia.
Two items that did come in towards the end of the Chapter, with regard to the Region:
    (1) The PNG-Solomon Islands Bishops Conference met at the Salesian Emmaus Retreat Centre in Port Moresby, and, amongst other things, elected Bishop Francesco Panfilo SDB as its Conference President.  Furthermore, so our 'fly on the wall' at the Conference indicates, at the end of their meeting on 11th April, all the bishops expressed their desire to celebrate their Mass in the newly and now almost ready-for-consecration Shrine to Mary Help of Christians.  That latter event, the consecration, will take place on 24th May.  The newly appointed Archbishop of Port Moresby, John Ribat MSC, declared that this Church will be 'the Shrine dedicated to Mary Help of Christians for Port Moresby and beyond'.
    (2)  The postnovitiate at Canlubang has concluded its academic year and students have headed out for a break and for new postings.
Second year brothers have started moving out to their respective new communities for their practical training houses. Five are from the FIN province and two from the FIS. One from the FIN will spend his practical training as the novices' assistant in Cebu (FIS). The Rector, Fr. Roel Soto, challenged the out-going Brothers to faithfully do three things-- (1) to be regular in spiritual direction, (2) openness in the monthly rendiconto and (3) to be community builders. The postnovitiate house remains their home, as Fr Michael La Guardia, the Catechist, said. If they need a place to recharge and recollect, and people to share with, the postnovitate continues welcomes them as their home.
