GC26: At last, some solid documentation

ROME: Sunday 2nd March 2008 -- As readers will be aware, every effort is being made to keep the wider Congregation not physically present at the Pisana informed as GC26 moves gradually through the forming (and possibly storming, in due course!) and eventually norming stages. For the moment, the Chapter has not actually started - it is 'forming' and 'being informed'.  The real beginning is Monday 3rd March.
You can read about this Chapter at many levels, each being an interpretative key of its own, in a way, and that even includes the level you are reading right now, which may be a little idiosyncratic at times, and will tend to reflect one or more individuals' points of view.  You can follow all the retreat talks, for instance (from the GC26 website available through sdb.org) or the Good Nights as they come (from the same URL). You can follow the ANS news, usually once daily except weekends unless there is something important happening that weekend, and ANS also makes available a video on a weekly basis, as well as photos.  www.sdb.org also makes photos available from the homepage - different ones from ANS, so you begin to see a wider spectrum of the people and events; you can follow the GC26 cartoonist, with his own interpretation each day, via the GC26 website.
All of the above help one establish a sense of the narrative that a General Chapter is within the life of the Congregation.  From time to time there is an outsider's appreciation of things too, as was the case on 1st March with a London Tablet article.  We don't print that of course, for professional reasons, but you can find it yourself easily enough online by googling The Tablet.
And now you can begin to follow some of the materials that have been presented in the Aula Magna by way of preparation.  The reports on departments and regions.  This material is available to registered readers only, that is, Salesians who have registered with sdb.org.  And one might add here that we have made only the text versions available because most of the multimedia formats that were presented ran to such weight in bytes that it really is beyond anyone's capacity to download them.     All of this, of course, with the due encouragement of the Moderator for the Chapter, Fr Francesco Cereda.  At a certain point (from Monday) he comes directly under the arrangements which the Chapter Assembly itself will establish with regard to communications.  A Chapter is a different animal from most assemblies, and has a peculiar degree of constitutional autonomy, but is guided by R 124 which you might care to read.  The overall intention of that Regulation is to keep confreres informed in sensible and constructive ways, and the Congregation, having decided six years ago to give Social Communications its own Councillor and build up all the elements that make this sector work, is in a much better situation today than it was even at the last General Chapter, to feed you with information (and invite you to contribute - AGORA, for instance).  In short, if it is possible to produce, share information, you can be assured there is a competent and eager team ready to do so.
