Don Bosco in the public eye in Myanmar

YANGON: 1st February 2008 -- For the first time in Myanmar, a public celebration of the Feast of St John Bosco took place on the eve of the Feast at St Mary's Cathedral Yangon.  The principle celebrant was Archbishop Charles Bo, himself a Salesian. Just a few years ago, such a public celebration would have been simply wishful thinking on the part of the Salesians.
The event began with the celebration of Mass in the evening, with 50 concelebrants from the Archdiocese but also from amongst the Salesians. The Superior of the Vice Province, Fr Joachim Ye Maung, was one of these.  It is estimated that some 600 faithful, including a number of Religious Congregations, were present.
The Archbishop used the occasion to briefly outline Don Bosco's story, especially  of the difficult beginnings, his strong determination to achieve his divine-inspired goals and the salvation of the young. For many in the congregation it was the first time they had heard these kinds of details.
Following the Mass, the Archbishop met with many past pupils who were present. The event concluded with a dinner for the clergy and Religious of the Archdiocese who had attended.
