FMA Mission Office-Germany, 17 February 2021 -- After the powerful cyclone in 2008, countless people fled from many destroyed villages to the metropolitan area of Yangon with 4 million. Difficult social conditions in the already very poor country are the result to this day. Like in Hlaing Thar Yar, a satelite suburb of 700,000 inhabitant city in the western part of Yangon. It is one of those cities that suffered particularly from the combination of destruction and the influx of refugees.

In 2016 the Don Bosco Salesian sisters finally opened a kindergarten in the middle of the slum area after settling there with a small community. It is one of the largest slums in Myanmar, in the area of the SDB parish of Holy Child of Jesus.

Normally the sisters look after over 100 kindergarten children, over 100 school children are in the afternoon care, where they receive, among other things, remedial instruction. Up to 150 children come to the oratory on Saturdays to spend time together. Around 70 children also receive catechesis classes."
