2428 Korean Youth Expo
austraLasia #2428

(N.B. For over a month now, austraLasia has been sent under the sending address of 'mailnews'. This is simply a means to ensure that the extensive list - more than a thousand recipients - can be sent quickly, and indeed can be sent at all, since a simple 'private' account can no longer send that quantity of email. Those of you who were looking for the word 'austraLasia' in the sending address, must now seek that word in the subject line! austraLasia still remains austraLasia!  It has not become 'mailnews'. And when I am away from Rome it will not be sent by mailnews but by Gmail. The subject line is what you need to watch out for).

Salesians bring clear note of colour to Fifth Korean Youth Expo

DAEGU CITY: 31st May 2009 -- The Fifth Korean Youth Expo was held in Daegu City from 28th to 31st May 2009.  The event was hosted by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. All agencies working for youth in Korea are allowed to participate.  This time around 113 different agencies took time to set up their booths and demonstrate their expertise in the youth field. Of these 113, five were Catholic.  During the four days of the Expo around 70,000 youth gathered to participate in the events.
The SDBs have participated from the very beginning in the first Expo. Last year the Youth Ministry Teams of both SDBs and FMAs took part as one group.  Both teams came together to plan and execute a common program.  They were well rewarded for their efforts.  This year the two teams came together again to plan and run another Expo program.  On the floor at the Expo the program was run jointly by the five SDB novices and the five FMA novices.
This year's Expo theme was 'Colourful Youth', and its objective was "By love and planting dreams, to open the way for young people to become world-class leaders for tomorrow".  On the floor the Salesians made their own 'Salesian Zone' with five booths dedicated to programs fostering Salesian Youth Spirituality. The 'Zone' motto was 'Young man/woman: beat the Salesians!'  A series of simple games were invented with content from the prevailing youth culture, whereby a contestant could vie with a Salesian for first place. If the contestant won, he or she received a small prize. This enabled the Salesians to get close to the youth there and accompany them with our spirituality.
