Cooperator Draft Statutes - English version; Chinese SELECT

ROME: 12th October 2005 --  To save time, two separate matters are bundled together in this informative piece which is not only for the EAO Region but for the English-speaking world in general.  Bosconet (www.bosconet.aust.com ) now contains the only, to our knowledge, English language draft of the Cooperator Statutes.  An Italian version has been in existence since February of this year.  The draft is probably the almost final draft before next year's World Congress and will allow Cooperators in the English-speaking world an opportunity to take part in the debate towards their finalisation.  As readers may know, the once single set of RAL or Regulations of Apostolic Life have, in the drafting process, actually become two documents.  Both Statutes (as they are currently called) and Regulations are now available in draft form in English.  Go to the Cooperator main page from the Bosconet homepage. The translation lays no claim to final accuracy but it does claim to be readable generally faithful to the original - sufficiently so to enable debate on the substance rather than details that might go back to translation issues.  If readers of austraLasia are aware of the Cooperator Delegate or Coordinator in their country they might do them the favour of alerting them to this material which might otherwise not reach them.
A second and very pleasing development is that SELECT, which is actually stored on sdb.org but more easily accessible via the homepage of Bosconet, now contains the Chinese glosses for the majority of terms.  These Chinese terms can be consulted from the SELECT homepage, which contains an English and Italian index, but they can also be consulted within the body of SELECT under each term's main entry.  It has been a mammoth work by a hard-working Chinese confrere, and one that the Chinese-speaking Salesian world can be very grateful for.  Hopefully it will provide the incentive to other languages, including other Asian languages such as Japanese, Vietnamese, to tackle the task as well.  The more languages which join in this project, the greater the ultimate value to the Congregation.  Anyway, try it and see - as it presently stands.  There are still some 200 terms to be glossed in Chinese - and this will give the reader a measure of the slow but gradual development in SELECT, since the unglossed (=untranslated) terms are mainly terms added since the Chinese translator first began his task.
And finally - Bosconet homepage has been cleaned up a little: a number of items which were directly accessible from there (but which also cluttered the page) are now accessible via an indirect click.
