400 head to Australia from Solomon Islands

HONIARA: 9th July 2008 -- Around 410 young people are officially heading out to nearby Australia after their commissioning Mass, celebrated by the Archbishop of Honiara, Adrian Smith, on Sunday 6th July.  In his homily recalling words of St Paul, he encouraged the youth to 'put an end to misdeeds and no longer be a slave to sin'.  The commissioning mass was celebrated at Don Bosco Henderson and was the culmination of a four day camp.
The preparatory camp for WYD08 involved spirituality and formation but also time to relax and interact and prepare cultural activities to be staged in Australia.  Australian High Commission representatives also gave the group instruction to acquaint participants with Australian procedures.
The young pilgrims are heading to Lismore NSW for the Days in the Diocese programme which precede the Sydney grand events in each of the dioceses of the continent. These days involve celebrating life and faith with families, cultural activities, festivals, sport and music, prayer and visits to churches and communities, witnessing the living Church in action serving the community, and days of social service.
Most of the young people have already departed for Australia and the rest will be following shortly. WYD organisers are still confident that the predicted numbers of pilgrims, at least half a million of them, will be achieved. Many of these will be from Oceania and from Asia.
