Cagliero Project in Timor Leste

August 31, 2018

By Ms. Lauren Hichaaba

Melbourne, Auslaria, 31 August 2018 -- The Cagliero Project is run by the Australia Pacific Province of the Salesians of Don Bosco. The aim of the program is to provide Australians with a long-term volunteer experience in overseas Salesian communities. The program has been running for over ten years and has sent volunteers to Samoa, Thailand, Cambodia, the Solomon Islands and Zambia.

Cagliero Project Director, Lauren Hichaaba and Vice Provincial of the AUL Province, Fr. Bernie Graham, SDB this week travelled on behalf of the program to Timor Leste. They visited Timor Leste at the request of TLS Provincial, Fr. Apolonario Neto, SDB to conduct a formal assessment to ascertain if Timor Leste can be a future recipient of Cagliero volunteers.

It has been a wonderful visit for the pair who have been welcomed all over Timor Leste in many Salesian communities. Timor Leste is the closest neighbour to Australia however there are vast differences between the two countries. Australia boasts one of the highest levels of human development throughout the world however Timor Leste is struggling to develop in many areas. Fortunately, the Salesians in Timor Leste are doing incredible work throughout the country with the young people of Timor. The vibrant Salesian Province is making great progress particularly in terms of education.

A huge thank you for the incredible hospitality of the Salesians in Timor – particularly Cls. Felipe and Euclidio who guided us graciously throughout the visit.

The Australia Pacific Province and the Cagliero Project look forward to supporting the wonderful and imperative works of the Salesians in Timor Leste.
