A SALUTE TO FR. GEORGE WILLIAMS

J. Fox (and the thoughts of thousands from the anglophone sector of the Congregation)

ROME: 8th July -- An era has passed for Salesians of the English speaking world.
On 8 July, 2002, the confreres at the Salesian Headquarters, Rome, bid adieu to Fr. George Williams, the official English translator of the last 18 years. They had come to salute the dedication with which he worked hard and unobtrusively to make the world of English-speaking Salesians benefit from official Salesian texts.

Fr. George Williams came to the ‘Casa Generalizia’ in 1972 when he was appointed Regional for the English-speaking region, comprising Great Britain, Ireland, Malta, South Africa, North America, Asia and Australia. In 1984 he was appointed secretary to Fr. McPake with the added responsibility of translating texts from Italian to English.

He is to continue to offer his services from England in whatever way he can. Meanwhile, Fr. Bernard Grogan has been appointed his successor.
