FORMATION CHALLENGE EMERGES FROM EAO MEETING

TOKYO: 5th February '04 -- While the ink is still drying on the as-yet-unfinished minutes of the Tokyo Social Communications meeting for the EAO Region, it is clear that formation, initial and ongoing, is emerging as a much felt need at all levels, be it discussions between provincials of the region or SC delegates.
The meeting, the first for the region since 1997, has shared its experiences, needs, challenges, and offered guidelines.  Fr. Tarcisio Scaramussa, General Councillor for SC, has indicated his satisfaction that an EAO Regional vision is definitely growing (as is the region!).  There is a strong desire for formation, and therefore a need for various responses to this be it by way of developing an SC syllabus, short-term opportunities for seminars, inclusion of SC more clearly and definitely in Organic Provincial Plans.
It was at the Batulao (FIN) meeting in 1997 that 'austraLasia' was born.  It has been a consistent factor in the regional vision of SC over these seven years and has been now further reinforced as a way of encouraging local correspondents to keep a regular focus for the region in ANS, since ANS effectively uses 'austraLasia' as a source of news from the region.
There will be further clarification of the results of the To0kyo meeting when Provincials meet with the Regional Councillor Fr. Vaclav Klement in the next few days.  We will keep you up to date!
