708 Regional SYM meeting in Melbourne
SYM: IN AN EVER-CHANGING WORLD

MELBOURNE: 25th August --  SYM - sometimes Salesian Youth Movement, but for the moment, in the context of the East Asia-Oceania gathering at Lysterfield (Melbourne, Australia), Salesian Youth Ministry.  The gathering, drawing delegates from the region, the Regional Fr. Vaclav Klement, the General Councillor for Youth Ministry, Fr. Anthony Domenech and team member from Rome, Fr. Mario Baclig, has set to the task of exploring both local differences around the region and common inspiration and planning as outlined by the YM Department, Rome.  The reality that all Provinces face is a global one - that of change, especially as it affects young people.

The regional SYM gathering is considering the following themes:

1.  Salesian Youth Ministry in the local communities (first two days)

  -   The Salesian School (a special topic on the advice of Fr Klement).

2.   Animation of Youth Ministry on the Province level.

  -  Vocation promotion (special topic).

3.     Regional Coordination of SYM.

   -  2004 Proposal for SYM from Rector Major.

The expected output of the meeting, which is to go through till the 28th with a 'fun' day before departure on 29th, is as follows:

1.  a plan on how to set up or improve the animation of youth ministry at province level.

2.  a blueprint of the regional co-ordination of SYM

As delegates have begun to grapple with the give-and-take between difference, change and the constants of the Salesian charism, they have given time to considering how these very constants are dynamic - they unfold and develop, as witnessed in the plan set out by the Rector Major and his Council for Youth Ministry (cf AGC 380).  The principles that have been so far presented could be a paradigm shift for some:  SYM develops within an evolving EPC (Educative and Pastoral Community) model, focuses on the wholistic growth of young people - and therefore is a 'total' ministry.  Finally, but importantly, SYM has to be managed.  This management is not a mere superficial element.

We wait to see where all this goes in the next few days!
