Tokyo's Salesian Polytech Team wins ROBOCON prize

TOKYO: 26th November 2007 -- The 20th ROBOCON competition held annually amongst Japanese technical schools, and sponsored by NHK National Television Network, was broadcast nationally on the afternoon of 25th November.  The Salesian Polytech Team, led by Professor Yonemori, and made up of ten members, took out the overall ROBOCON prize, while the actual competition of the day was won by the technical school from Fukuoka.  The 'Salesio' team was rewarded for its 'originality, creativity and high technical ability'.
The final competition took place amongst teams which had survived earlier competitions at regional level, leaving just 25 teams to battle it out at the end.  The competition consisted of building a robot which could wrest a flag from its opposition robots, by extending a long spear-like arm, while at the same time protecting its own flag!
Robots of all shapes and sizes were lined up to do battle.  The teams had thought up all kinds of original robots for the task which had spectator and television viewers holding their breath, caught up in the suspense of it all.
There will be a replay on national television on 26th and 29th December, broadcast simultaneously via a satellite network.
